HORSE MACKEREL OR CARANX (TRACHURUS TRACHURUS OR JACK MACKAREL)
The family of the Carangidae, in the order of the Peciformes. (bluefish). Many times it is called Caranx depending on its size. This fish is known for different species. From all of them, the jack mackerel is considered to be the one with the best quality.
The jack mackerel has a long and compressed body with a very marked lateral line. It has big eyes and big mouth in relation to the size of its head.
The body is blue greenish except its belly, which has white and silverish shades. It has a dark mark on its gill cover.
There are different sizes, the maximum size it can reach is between 50 – 60cm, the regular size is 15-30cm, but the minimum size is 15cm. Its weight varies for the small ones until 400 grams, for the middle sized from 400- 700 grams and for the big ones from 700 grams to one kilo.
Obtaining of the product:
- Extractive fishing: the most common ways are fishing with bottom trawl, trammel net and fishing net. Capture zone is the Northwest Atlantic (FAO 27)
Presentation of the product:
- Entire fish and refrigerated in water, ice and salt.
It is a fish which can be included within the “popular” and the affordable ones.
